NORMAN - It's no small feat to break a statewide average monthly rainfall record, especially during Oklahoma's primary wet season of April through June. According to preliminary data from the Oklahoma Mesonet, however, that is exactly what has occurred. With one day remaining in the month, the statewide average rainfall total currently stands at 8.59 inches. That breaks the old record of 8.55 inches, set a year after statehood in 1907. Normal statewide average rainfall for June is 4.26 inches. The record will be eclipsed even further with heavy rainfall expected to continue into the month's final day.
Central Oklahoma remains the big winner during the month with an average rainfall of 12.34 inches, nearly triple their normal amount of 4.57 inches. The northeast and southwest are also in double-digit territory with 10.20 inches and 10.51 inches, respectively. The Oklahoma Mesonet site at Medicine Park has the month's top total thus far with 17.15 inches. Apache's 16.67 inches shatters their old record - for any month - of 15.09 inches from June 1932.
For the year thus far, Oklahoma's statewide average rainfall stands at 25.14 inches, 6.13 inches above normal and the 11th wettest such period since 1895. The total for all of 2006 was 28.59 inches.
